He is the author of more than 90 peer-reviewed articles on tobacco, focusing on youth smoking, secondhand smoke science and policy, and the evaluation of policies to reduce tobacco use. He is also the author of a book entitled “Marketing Public Health: Strategies to Promote Social Change” and of a popular tobacco control policy blog, entitled “The Rest of the Story: Tobacco News Analysis and Commentary”.Search for more papers by this authorPublished Online:31 May 2013https://doi.org/10.2217/ebo.12.531AboutSectionsView ArticleView Full TextPDF/EPUB ToolsAdd to favoritesDownload CitationsTrack Citations ShareShare onFacebookTwitterLinkedInReddit View chapterAbstract: Pharmacotherapy is the mainstay of intervention for smoking cessation. Yet how effective are smoking cessation medications? Most of the evidence that supports the use of nicotine-replacement products and drugs that interact with nicotine receptors comes from clinical trials. Yet population-based studies that have examined the use of these medications in real-life settings do not share the clinical studies’ conclusions about their effectiveness. This chapter reviews the evidence regarding the effectiveness of smoking-cessation pharmacotherapy, both in clinical trials and in real-life settings. It identifies two major theoretical problems with current approaches to smoking-cessation treatment and outlines two innovative approaches that address these problems could advance the field of smoking-cessation treatment in the future.
