- W2435445337 abstract "An investigation on “Characterization of kharif rice ecosystems of Andhra Pradesh using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System Techniques” was carried out with the specific objectives of delineation of rice ecosystems in Andhra Pradesh using remote sensing, estimating the potential productivity of rice by using ORYZA 2000 model and identification of constraints for achieving potential productivity in different ecosystems. Rice crop in the study area were delineated using ERDAS IMAGINE 9.3 software. Satellite data of IRS P6 AWiF sensor during kharif 2009 was used for delineating the rice crop grown in the area. It was observed that rice crop grown in few districts was under estimated compared to the actual area in Andhra Pradesh and ranged from 1.5 per cent in Guntur to 20.0 per cent in Ananthapur district. In Guntur district, the texture of the soils varied from sandy loam to clay. The soils are slightly acidic to alkaline and non saline in nature. The soils are low to medium in organic carbon and available nitrogen, low to high in available phosphorus and potassium. In Nalgonda district, the texture of the soils varied from sandy loam to sandy clay loamy in nature. The soils are low to medium in organic carbon and available nitrogen, low to high in available phosphorus and potassium. In irrigated ecosystem of Visakhapatnam, the texture of the soils varied from sandy clay loam to clay in nature. The soils are slightly acidic to alkaline and non saline in nature. The soils are low to medium in available nitrogen and phosphorus and low to high in available potassium. The soil reaction in these soils is acidic and non saline in nature. The nutrient status of the soils was low compared to irrigated rice ecosystem. The available CHARACTERIZATION OF KHARIF RICE ECOSYSTEMS OF ANDHRA PRADESH USING REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM TECHNIQUES nitrogen and phosphorus in these soils were under low category and available potassium was low to medium in range. The deviation of the predicted yield over observed yield ranged from 11.6 to 16.8 per cent with a mean of 13.6 per cent in Guntur district. In Nalgonda district, the model over estimated the potential yield with the per cent error ranging from 32.3 to 37.3 and the yield gap ranged 3.75 to 4.71 t ha during 2007 to 2009. The yield gap (4.40 t ha) was less in the year 2009 and ranged between 4.40 to 6.07 t ha. Under rainfed rice, model simulated yield ranged between 4.16 t ha to 5.12 t ha with a mean of 4.66 t ha and the deviation ranged from 43.3 to 46.3 per cent. The yield gap ranged from 2.91 to 3.56 t ha. With increase in CO2 concentration from 340 to 640 ppm, the percent change in simulated yield of rice in Guntur district is from -5.6 to 16.6, 5.8 to 16.9 and -5.8 to 20.0 per cent, respectively during 2007 to 2009, respectively. Similarly in Nalgonda district, the percent change in simulated yield ranged from -5.6 to 20.3, -1.2 to 12.4 and -2.2 to 11.8 per cent, respectively during 2007 to 2009. When temperature increased from 1C to 4C above the mean temperature, the per cent decrease in rice yield varied from -6.3 to -55.2 from 2007 to 2009 in Guntur district. In Nalgonda district, when temperature raised from 1C to 4C above the mean temperature, the per cent decrease in rice yield varied from -3.7 to -37.8 per cent. In Visakhapatnam district, when temperature increases to 1C to 4C above the mean temperature, the per cent decrease in rice yield varied from -6.8 to -39.6 per cent from 2007 to 2009. In Guntur district, the soils are designated as highly suitable to marginally suitable for rice cultivation. In Visakhapatnam, under irrigated conditions the soils are highly suitable for rice crop. Under rainfed conditions, the soils are moderately suitable to marginally suitable for rice crop. The variations in yield are governed by seasonal and spatial differences in climate factors and their degree of influence on a particular phenophase of rice crop. Major constraints encountered by the farmers were late planting, occurrence of weeds, higher pest incidence, low plant population and inadequate irrigation water. The constraints that limit the yields are socio economic conditions of the farmers, soil and crop related constraints. In rainfed rice, often crop suffers from soil moisture stress due to erratic and inadequate rainfall. The socio-economic constraints perceived by the farmers are high cost of labour, high cost of inputs, high rate of credit, non-availability of credit and scattered land holding." @default.
