- W2436055732 abstract "In this paper I want to revisit one of the basic issues in psychoanalytic criticism, namely: the process of symbolisation that seems to be common to the dream-work and the literary work. Lacan's reading of Jakobsonian rhetoric has provided literary criticism with a way to get beyond the transparency and reductionism of early Freudian criticism: the poetic may now be read symptomatically; analytical material may be read textually. This methodological affinity between psychoanalysis and literature at the level of tropes - metaphor and metonymy - has been significant in the continuing search for the most productive fit between the psychoanalytic methodology and its literary object. Linguistic deformations in dreams and literature are now poetic (in the Formalist- Jakobsonian sense), and symptomatic (in the Freudian sense). The Lacanian psychoanalytic reading has led to a formalist understanding of the textualisation 01 the sexual which does not reduce literature to psychoanalysis, as has so often been the case in the history of psychoanalytic criticism. In what follows, returning to Lacan's papers on the symbolic sentence and on metaphor and metonymy, from the seminars of the 1950s, as theoretical substance, I shall offer some suggestions for symptomatic reading of instances of libidinized writing in D. H. Lawrence. My principal claim is that such writing in Lawrence brings together the aesthetic and the sexual in a creative process of symbolisation that calls for a psychoanalytic reading for which Lacan provides the terms and the theory. 2.
