- W2436958030 abstract "ISEE-318 Objective: To investigate the distribution and determinants of blood lead levels (PbB) in Israeli children (n = 317) aged 1 month to 10 years, representing various ethnic, geographic, socioeconomic, nutritionald and environmental groupings. Material and Methods: Data were collected from 1999 to 2000 on a self-selected study group using a prevalence design with targeted convenience samples aimed at high-risk areas defined by dense traffic, point source of contamination, lower socioeconomic standard, and old houses. Capillary blood samples were analyzed in the field with portable equipment (Lead Care Analyzer, ESA, Inc., USA). By questionnaire, we collected data on demographics, residential variables, occupational risks, and nutrition. Exposures were examined in terms of mean, geometric mean, standard deviation, and range. Cross tabulations and multivariable analyses were performed to check crude and adjusted odds ratios, confidence intervals, and significance levels to find associations between the exposures and having either “high” or “low” blood lead levels, (low = 0–2.59 μg/dL and high = 2.6 μg/dL and above). Results: Ethnicity was mostly Druze and Jewish (55.7% and 36.9%). Mean, median, and ranges for all groups were 3.2 μg/dL, 2.59 μg/dL, and 0.40 to 18.20 μg/dL, respectively. Seven children (2.5%) had blood lead concentrations >10 μg/dL in 1 nonurban area. In the final multivariable logistic regression model, PbB >2.59 μg/dL was positively associated with Druze ethnicity (OR 2.31, CI = 1.36–3.95), maternal age ≤30 years (OR 1.87, CI = 1.12–3.10), >25 cigarettes smoked daily in the home (OR 5.68, CI = 1.42–22.80), breast-feeding in infancy (OR 2.56, CI = 1.40–4.68), and use of ceramic kitchenware (OR 1.87, CI = 1.09–3.19). Conclusions: Results confirmed a continuing decline in PbB of Israeli children. Findings of higher blood lead levels in children breast-fed in infancy despite higher later dietary milk intake suggest the possibility of later internal mobilization of bone lead stores back into blood." @default.
