This represents a 94 per cent (112 of 118) retrieval rate of a group studied more than 2 years previously. Of the 11 patients judged to be at high risk 4 (36 per cent) have suffered bony metastases, whereas only 3 of 86 patients (3 per cent) with normal bone marrow acid phosphatase by radioimmunoassay have done so. An additional 184 patients with carcinoma and 77 controls have been studied. Although radioimmunoassay greatly improves specificity in bone marrow aspirates a few falsely positive results can occur. This finding may be secondary to cross reaction from leukocyte acid phosphatase and/or interference from lipid. © 1981 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByMorote J, Ruibal A, Pascual C, Palou J and de Torres J (2018) Bone Marrow Prostatic Specific Antigen and Prostatic Acid Phosphatase Levels: Are They Helpful in Staging Prostatic CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 137, NO. 5, (891-893), Online publication date: 1-May-1987.Heller J (2018) Prostatic Acid Phosphatase: Its Current Clinical StatusJournal of Urology, VOL. 137, NO. 6, (1091-1103), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1987.Jewett H (2018) Prostatic Cancer: A Personal View of the ProblemJournal of Urology, VOL. 131, NO. 5, (845-849), Online publication date: 1-May-1984.Pontes J (2018) Biological Markers in Prostate CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 6, (1037-1047), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1983.Vihko P, Kontturi M, Lukkarinen O and Vihko R (2018) Radioimmunoassayable Prostate-Specific Acid Phosphatase in Peripheral and Bone Marrow Sera Compared in Diagnosis of Prostatic Cancer PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 128, NO. 4, (739-741), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1982.Schellhammer P, Warden S, Wright G and Sieg S (2018) Bone Marrow Acid Phosphatase by Counterimmune Electrophoresis: Pre-Treatment and Post-Treatment CorrelationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 127, NO. 1, (66-68), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1982.Pontes J (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 127, NO. 1, (68-68), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1982.
