• W244284477 abstract "This presentation details an automated dispatch system designed to improve customer experience in a demand responsive transportation (DRT) system without increasing the resources required by the operator. The system was designed for the shuttle at Georgia Tech, known as the Stingerette. The purpose of the Stingerette is to increase student safety by providing late night on-demand transportation in and around Georgia Tech’s campus. The initial operation of the Stingerette was entirely manual. Dispatchers would receive phone calls from students requesting rides. The dispatcher would then contact the van drivers via a two-way radio system, and the drivers would decide among themselves who would handle the request. When the driver reached the student’s location, he or she would contact the dispatcher to confirm that the pickup had taken place. As the popularity of the Stingerette service increased, this manual system was unable to keep pace with demand. Dispatchers were overburdened with calls, forcing students to call multiple times to speak with a dispatcher. Once a request was received, it was difficult for the drivers to determine who could best handle the request, leading to inefficient routes and long wait times. Consequently, many students would choose to walk instead of waiting for the van. To alleviate these problems, RideCell engineers worked with Stingerette to develop a decision support system to automate requests, improve driver assignment efficiency, and facilitate communication between dispatchers, drivers, and students. The solution is a web-based dispatching system that aggregates all requests into a single queue. From this queue, the dispatcher can make informed vehicle assignment decisions based on a live system map which shows passenger pick-up and drop-off sites as well as current and future vehicle locations. Furthermore, students no longer need to speak with the dispatcher directly. Instead they make their requests using a web-based interface or smartphone application, which also allows the students to track the progress of their assigned driver via a live GPS map. Drivers are alerted to all trips assigned to them via a dash-mounted tablet computer. With only a glance, the drivers can view their assigned trips and passenger locations and use that information to choose efficient routes for visiting each passenger. The results of the new automated dispatching system have been overwhelmingly positive. Since the system was implemented at Georgia Tech in February 2010, the average number of ride requests per night has increased from 200 requests to 350 requests. The increase in usage is attributed to the new easy-to-use ride request system while also maintaining a high level of service for the Stingerette system. In fact, despite the 75% increase in usage, and the fact that no new drivers or dispatchers have been added, the efficiency of the automated dispatch system has allowed the Stingerette to maintain a 6 minute average response time for all requests.
