- W2443371817 abstract "The Murray Davidson Award of the Section on Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes an outstanding clinician, educator, and scientist who has advanced the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. This year's awardee is Dr Robert Squires of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Dr Squires grew up in El Paso, Texas. Rob graduated from Austin College in Sherman Texas and went to medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He went to St Louis Children's Hospital for pediatric internship and residency. He did his GI fellowship there under Jim Keating, a previous winner of this award. While in St Louis he met and married Dr Janet Endress, whom he describes as a continuing inspiration. On moving to private practice in Fort Worth Texas, Rob received a rapid education in practice management and medical economics and ample opportunity to master new clinical challenges. Rob has always done whatever is best for the kids, even if it was not the easiest pathway for him. In Fort Worth, Rob took in-house call to help run a pediatric ICU. During the HIV pandemic Rob and Janet combated fear and ignorance by allowing their own children to play with children who were outcasts because of HIV. Rob was recruited to Dallas in 1987 as division chief. He later gave up that title to strengthen the division by reuniting private practice and academic groups. Recruited to Pittsburgh as clinical chief in 2003, he brought the hepatology and intestinal failure patients under the care of the GI service at a personal cost of greatly increased call. He subsequently gave up the roles of clinical chief and director of intestinal failure service to focus on research and development of the hepatology program. Rob has advocated for children through many roles in the Texas Pediatric Society and American Academy of Pediatrics and as a leader in NASPGHAN. Rob is a gifted teacher who has contributed to the education of dozens of fellows and countless residents. He has co-authored numerous chapters and lectured at many national and international meetings. Rob observed long ago that our clinics are our laboratories. He has proven that a research career can begin well after fellowship. He founded and obtained NIH funding for the Pediatric Acute Liver Failure Registry in 2000. This study set the example for all of the multicenter collaborative studies that are changing the landscape of Pediatric Hepatology, IBDology and Pancreatology. The Pediatric Acute Liver Failure Registry was refunded in 2005 as the Multicenter Group to Study Acute Liver Failure in Children, and it continues to be funded. Rob has demonstrated in this a tremendous ability to get talented people who hold strong opinions to work together. Rob's greatest passion is his family. Rob and Janet have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Dr Squires has consistently served the health care needs of children, the education of trainees, and the advancement of knowledge. He embodies the spirit of Dr Davidson and is an outstanding recipient of the Murray Davidson Award." @default.
