- W244359043 abstract "Over the decades, readers of Hawthorne's fiction have detected a large number of influences on his thought and writings. One interesting example of these readings suggests that Hawthorne was an artist divided between a con? scious philosophical agreement with eighteenth-century empirical thought (in which meanings are fixed) and an unconscious instinctual agreement with nineteenth-century Romantic thought (in which meanings are open-ended).1 Although this formulation of a major tension in Hawthorne's writings has endured, critics have especially studied Hawthorne's sensitivity to philosophical and artistic developments during the nineteenth century, while they have paid relatively less attention to evidence of his eighteenth-century cultural inherit? ance.2 One particularly cogent assessment of Hawthorne's awareness of eigh? teenth-century thought detects his artistic use of certain arguments of David Hume, whose philosophical work Hawthorne might have read directly but whose thought he certainly knew at least second hand from his studies at Bowdoin College.3 It is certain that in 1822, while a college student, he had tried to read Hume ' s famous History of Eng land, but found it terribly dull and doubted that he would finish it.4 In one way or another, Hawthorne was exposed to the concepts of Humean skeptical empiricism, which not only formed an important component of his intellectual heritage but also apparently, in his later years, suited his sense of life. To propose that Humean concepts contributed to Hawthorne's understand? ing of the world is not to argue that he necessarily thought specifically of Hume as he wrote. Humean skeptical empiricism is part of a philosophical tradition he had inherited, as had his generation, and we can profitably annotate features of his work by means of Hume's philosophy without in the least intimating that the philosopher was consciously on Hawthorne's mind much of the time.
