- W244366926 abstract "Reading Scriptures in China, edited by Chloe Starr. London: T&T Clark, 2008. p + 229 pp. £65.00 (hardcover). Texts holding a thousand meanings still begin with single words. Reading Scriptures in is an engaging exploration of how such words have resonated in a specific context. Chloe Starr has brought together twelve important and challenging essays which both grapple with the interplay between language and meaning and muse upon the journeys between thoughts and texts, especially but not only within faith communities in China. This rich conversation features the voices of female and male scholars working within several disciplines including philosophy, biblical studies, literature, theology and history. Three scholars, Chen Jian-ming, Tian Haihua and Zha Changping, work at the Studies Centre of Sichuan University. Grace Hui Liang is based at Zhejiang University and Richard X. Y. Zhang is director of the Centre for Studies at the Institute of Comparative Religion, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong. The remaining seven contributors, Fredrik Fallman, Thor Strandenass, Sze-kar Wan, John Y. H. Yieh, Mark Fang, Lloyd Haft and Starr herself, work at academic institutions throughout Europe and the USA. The research questions for the majority of the essays arise from reflections about mainland Chinese communities, or more accurately the nonCatholic Chinese communities, although some of the essays also refer more broadly to events happening in the Sinophone world. Although this uneven weighting makes sense in the mainland context, given the important role of the scriptures in Protestant communities and the energy with which translation work has taken place within this tradition, the attention to the communities does not exclude Chinese Catholic voices. For instance, the final three essays focus on aspects of Chinese Catholic responses to scripture. These pieces resonate with various questions pondered in the previous chapters. Reading Scriptures in is to be commended for its ecumenical focus and its continuation of the trend to move beyond polemics in recent studies about Christianity in China. Fundamentally, the twelve authors seek to explore how the words, texts and collections of texts that can collectively be called Christian scriptures in China have been read, interpreted and used within China, mostly in the period since the nineteenth century but also with some reference to the late Ming and early Qing periods. Some interesting results of these explorations include the propositions that the presence of scriptures in influenced the development of the baihua literary style (chapters by Starr and Thor Strandenges) and that the texts were an important element in the national discourse about spiritual and civil renewal at the time of the May Fourth movement (see Sze-kar Wan's essay). …" @default.
