- W2444153839 abstract "The detailed study of the Southern Pennine woodlands, begun by Woodhead (1906), and developed by Moss (1913), has not progressed far beyond descriptive accounts of the plant associations. Quantitative work on the causal connexion between habitat factors and plant distribution and success within these associations, as advocated by Yapp (1925), has, however, begun in these (Ovington, 1947; Jowett & Scurfield, 1949) and similar woods (for instance, Watt, 1931 a, b). It is towards a development of such quantitative work that these preliminary observations are directed. Moss (1913) concerned himself chiefly with the Pennine ash- and oakwoods, as these were apparently the natural primitive woodlands (as defined by Moss, Rankin & Tansley, 1910) of the district. In the oakwoods, Moss distinguished four facies on the basis of associated trees, ground flora and soil characteristics. They form a series in which altitude (and with it, climate) is probably the most obvious differentiating factor, though varying topography and edaphic conditions (including variation in geological substratum) must also be considered. It is with the two most extensive and clearly defined types that the present account is concerned. These two types, distinguished largely on the basis of ground flora and soil, are: (a) the upland heathy woods with a ground-flora pattern usually composed of Vaccinium myrtillus, Deschampsiaflexuosa, Calluna vulgaris and Galium saxatile, in decreasing order of abundance; and (b) those of moderate elevations on somewhat drier, less highly organic, and less acid, soils, with a field layer dominated by the complementary society of Pteridium aquilinum, Scilla non-scripta and Holcus mollis. The question arises as to how far this classification can be applied to the planted and semi-natural woodlands of the area-where planted beech, or pine, for example, has replaced the primitive oakwood; also, as to how far it can be applied to those oakwoods occurring on the Pennine foothills west of Sheffield. These questions have been investigated by carrying out ecological observations in a number of woodlands, chosen so as to give as wide a range of dominant tree type as was consistent with ease of accessibility from Sheffield. As the two species Holcus mollis L. and Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) Trin. invariably occur together within them, such observations also provided an approach to the problems of distribution and success of these species." @default.
