Of the patients 124 had 1 or more biopsies within 6 to 36 months after completion of radiotherapy when there was no evidence of local or distant recurrence of tumor. Patients were followed for a mean of 64 months (range 14 to 175 months) and received no other therapy before relapse. Over-all, 43 of these patients (35 per cent) had a positive biopsy result. The incidence of positive biopsy results correlated directly with the initial stage of the tumor, ranging from 22 per cent of stage BIN to 50 per cent of stage Cl lesions. However, biopsy results did not correlate with the grade of the tumor. Local recurrence and distant metastases were much more common among patients with a positive biopsy result (p equals 0.0006). Local recurrence developed in 58 per cent of the patients with a positive biopsy by 5 years and in 82 per cent by 10 years. Of those in whom all biopsies were negative only 18 per cent had local recurrence by 5 years and 32 per cent by 10 years. Biopsy results retained their prognostic significance even among the more favorable subset of patients whose pelvic lymph nodes were negative initially and those with a normal prostatic examination at biopsy. These results indicate that a post-irradiation prostate biopsy 6 to 36 months after completion of treatment can be used to determine the efficacy of a particular radiotherapeutic regimen as well as the success or failure of radiotherapy in an individual patient. © 1986 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByBabaian R, Donnelly B, Bahn D, Baust J, Dineen M, Ellis D, Katz A, Pisters L, Rukstalis D, Shinohara K and Thrasher J (2018) Best Practice Statement on Cryosurgery for the Treatment of Localized Prostate CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 180, NO. 5, (1993-2004), Online publication date: 1-Nov-2008.Lotan Y, Stanfield J, Cho L, Sherwood J, Abdel-Aziz K, Chang C, Forster K, Kabbani W, Hsieh J, Choy H and Timmerman R (2018) Efficacy of High Dose Per Fraction Radiation for Implanted Human Prostate Cancer in a Nude Mouse ModelJournal of Urology, VOL. 175, NO. 5, (1932-1936), Online publication date: 1-May-2006.ZELEFSKY M, FUKS Z, HUNT M, LEE H, LOMBARDI D, LING C, REUTER V, VENKATRAMAN E and LEIBEL S (2018) HIGH DOSE RADIATION DELIVERED BY INTENSITY MODULATED CONFORMAL RADIOTHERAPY IMPROVES THE OUTCOME OF LOCALIZED PROSTATE CANCERJournal of Urology, VOL. 166, NO. 3, (876-881), Online publication date: 1-Sep-2001.BOCHNER B, FIGUEROA A, SKINNER E, LIESKOVSKY G, PETROVICH Z, BOYD S and SKINNER D (2018) SALVAGE RADICAL CYSTOPROSTATECTOMY AND ORTHOTOPIC URINARY DIVERSION FOLLOWING RADIATION FAILUREJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 1, (29-33), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1998.Long J, Fallick M, LaRock D and Rand W (2018) PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES FOLLOWING CRYOSURGICAL ABLATION OF THE PROSTATE IN PATIENTS WITH CLINICALLY LOCALIZED PROSTATE CARCINOMAJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 2, (477-484), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1998.Prendergast N, Atkins M, Schatte E, Paulson D and Walther P (2018) p53 Immunohistochemical and Genetic Alterations are Associated at High Incidence with Post-Irradiated Locally Persistent Prostate CarcinomaJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 5, (1685-1692), Online publication date: 1-May-1996.Waehre H, Åmellem Ø, Stenwig A, Tverå K, Juul M, Pettersen E and Fosså S (2018) Deoxyribonucleic Acid Cytometry and Histological Findings Before and After 125Iodine Implantation of Primary Prostate CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 3 Part 1, (838-840), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1992.Marinelli D, Shanberg A, Tansey L, Sawyer D, Syed N and Puthawala A (2018) Followup Prostate Biopsy in Patients with Carcinoma of the Prostate Treated By 192Iridium Template Irradiation Plus Supplemental External Beam RadiationJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 3 Part 2, (922-925), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1992.Dugan T, Shipley W, Young R, Verhey L, Althausen A, Heney N, McManus P and Abraham E (2018) Biopsy after External Beam Radiation Therapy for Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate: Correlation with Original Histological Grade and Current Prostate Specific Antigen LevelsJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 5, (1313-1316), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1991.Drago J (2018) Editorial CommentsJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 5, (1319-1319), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1991.Kabalin J, Hodge K, McNeal J, Freiha F and Stamey T (2018) Identification of Residual Cancer in the Prostate Following Radiation Therapy: Role of Transrectal Ultrasound Guided Biopsy and Prostate Specific AntigenJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 2 Part 1, (326-331), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1989.
