- W244605811 abstract "Lawn mowers are about as mundane as it gets, but lurking here are some pretty interesting problems and concerns for your students or teams of students to address. Challenge them to first understand how this technology came about, and then engage their creativity to redesign this common outdoor appliance. Introduction Today you can buy three basic types of lawn mowers for the home: gasoline, electric, and the old push-powered model (though they are getting hard to find and are now expensive). Gasoline models tend to dominate the market, especially for large lawns. So pervasive have these petroleum-based-fuel models become that some communities are quite concerned about the smelly and polluting exhaust they produce ... not to mention the noise ... and have regulations for these modern-day conveniences. Electric mowers have made inroads in the market, often used where lawns are rather small, conditions do not permit the use of larger gas models, or where the storage of gasoline may be a problem. Some senior citizens often prefer an electric mower for a variety of reasons. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Might there be another way to power lawn mowers besides the ways described above? What technologies would your students like to see implemented? What sorts of benefits might be offered by a switch to alternative lawn-mower technologies? The Challenge As usual, a good starting point is to do some research into lawn mower history and development that might disclose interesting ideas, insights, and technologies to think about. Who are the inventors behind the original gasoline-powered lawn mower, and what was their reasoning for taking the technology in this direction? What factors motivated a move to apply engine technology to the common activity of mowing grass? Was the ability to build rugged and durable small engines the main motivator, or was customer physical effort and the time to do all this work the real reason for change? [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Some might say that, as people moved out to the suburbs, larger front and back lawns became more common, and the task of mowing a lawn expanded dramatically--after all, if you live in a crowded city, how much lawn can you really own? Did modern life in the suburbs motivate the application of engine technology? Feel free to contact lawn mower dealers, manufacturers, and retail stores to see if anything can be learned about how these devices are changing. And don't forget to see what private inventors are doing as well. Check them out on the Internet. What would customers want in their ideal conception of the perfect home lawn mower? Are there customer wants and needs that can trump the usual concerns we hear about in the popular press and magazine articles? Who can the students survey to understand what customers might want to see in tomorrow's improved lawn mower? Students should think about the following broad categories when approaching this challenge: * Can something be done to existing lawn mower designs, radically altering their performance and environmental impact? * What options for different power sources could be used today? * Are there new options that require new power sources? * Where and how should the improved lawn mowers be marketed? Lots of futuristic-thinking people would like to see more solar applications around the home. …" @default.
