- W244697890 abstract "Reginald Frank Christian. Alexis Aladln. The Tragedy of Exile. New York, Ottawa and Toronto: Legas, 1999. 234 pp. Map. Photographs. Index. $25.00, paper. In his Histoire de France, Jules Michelet said, History is resurrection. This metaphor is often true in research dealing with Russian historical figures. Among numerous recently published works which render historical justice to largely forgotten individuals and historical events, biography of Aleksei Fiodorovich Aladin (1873-1927) by Professor Reginald Frank Christian deserves particular attention.Based on extensive archival research and, for most part, previously unpublished materials, this book presents a biography of a Russian whose entire sadly unfulfilled (p. 10) happened to be intertwined with major historical events, both in his native country and abroad, in first quarter of twentieth century. In Simbirsk, where he grew up, Aladin attended same Gimnasium as Vladimir Ul'ianov (Lenin) and Aleksandr Kerenskii (leader of 1917 Provisional Government). Studying natural sciences at famous Kazan' University from 1892 to 1896, Aladin followed many other young Russians on path of political activism, which first led to his expulsion from school, and later forced him to flee to Western Europe. Upon his return to in 1905, he played an active role in first Russian Duma as leader of Labour Group (Trudoviki). During his second exile ( 1906-1917), he directed much of his energy toward improved understanding between Western society and Russian liberal circles. When Aladin returned to in 1917, he became a prominent figure in a group of politicians closely associated with General Lavr Kornilov. Aladin remained with White Army forces for almost entire period of Russian Civil War. he returned to Britain in 1920 and spent last years of his life trying, often unsuccessfully, to bridge gap between various Russian political groups and Western society.Christian does not merely recount facts of Aladin's life. Instead, he places his subject's story in broader historical context of political developments in and Great Britain and relations between two countries at dawn of twentieth century. The book is greatly enriched with numerous quotations from memoirs, contemporary sources and scholarly works, which at times support and at times contradict author's opinion. Christian creates a multi-dimensional portrait of time, giving voice to Aladin's contemporaries and extensively alluding to scholars who have studied historical events that Aladin lived through. The book is divided into sixteen chapters, following Aladin's life in chronological order, with a foreword by author. In foreword, R.F. Christian introduces Aladin and outlines most important events of his life; he also discusses his own sources and explains his system of notes and references.Chapter 1, Childhood, Boyhood and Youth, describes Aladin's early years in prior to his first escape abroad. From very beginning, author weaves a broad historical canvas (where he will later position his subject) and restores the background of growing revolutionary and terrorist movements in Russia (p. 23). Chapter 2, European Exile. France, Belgium and England, depicts Aladin's life abroad and introduces reader to other Russian emigres with whom Aladin then became acquainted. Chapter 3, Back to Russia. Labour Leader in First Duma, discusses Aladin's activities in First Duma within context of short and stormy history of this institution.Aladin's lecture tour of United States is focus of Chapter 4, second Exile. American Mission. Here, author makes a concerted effort to present an in-depth overview of political and ideological situation in United States at time. Chapter 5, Marriage, offers a more intimate look into Aladin's life-his troubled marriage to Elizaveta Grigor'eva, his wife's poor health, and constant financial problems couple faced in Britain. …" @default.
