- W245002275 abstract "English Abstract As a followup to his 2006 article in Fontes Artis Musicae about his project to create a library of folk music in Nigeria, Dr. Onyeji details his search for funding for the proj ect, some of the results, and requests support for his project. You may recall that at the IAML international conference in Warsaw, Poland, I presented a paper on my initiative to undertake a recording project to rescue the folk music heritage of various Nigerian cultures from possible extinction in the future. That paper received significant interest and attention during and after the conference. The presentation has since been published. (2) Contained in the paper are the need for the project, the objectives, structure, benefits, strategies and tools required for the project as well as calls for support or collaboration by interested institutions or bodies. Also discussed in the paper are the collections already made as well as the roles of student collaborators. The motivation I got after the presentation to continue with the project was quite substantial. I have continued to be grateful to the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML) for supporting me to attend the conference. I believe the presentation achieved the purpose of opening to members the true picture of the state of music libraries in Nigeria. It also afforded members the opportunity to appreciate the need to support the project as an important initiative. It was quite obvious from people's comments and responses that they felt the need to support and contribute to the project in various ways. Promises were also made to send materials (books, scores, CDs, DVDs, etc.) to support the library of my Department of Music owing to its present poor condition and scarce collections. Some of these promises have already been fulfilled. It is, however, important to mention that the folk music project has not yet received any external support in funding or provision of equipment or collaboration. While this may be at variance with sentiments expressed during my presentation in Warsaw, I must say I am still hopeful that some people or institutions would make some positive responses or contributions in the near future. At the moment therefore, the project still relies on my personal efforts and those of my student collaborators. The project is still at the nursery stage but there is strong conviction that it will steadily grow. Although the project has not received external funding, I have not stopped making efforts to get research funding from different sources. Below is an example of such an attempt at my University to secure a research grant to finance the project. Universities in Nigeria get annual funding from the National Universities Commission (NUC), mainly in the form of research grants to enable university lecturers to conduct research in their various fields. Disbursement of such money is left to the individual university administrations. Such moneys are allocated to research based on merit and the financial requirement of each research proposal. As a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, I decided to explore the opportunity to apply for funding to my University Research Grant Committee when an announcement was made for submission of proposals in the first quarter of 2006. …" @default.
