- W245655657 abstract "New York Times Quote of Day on December 23, 2008, was from story about reactions at Yeshiva University to stunning collapse of financier Bernard MadofFs fraudulent investment empire. elevating to level of demiworship people with big bucks, said Rabbi Benjamin Blech, professor of philosophy of law, have been destroying values of our future generation. We need total rethinking of who heroes are, who role models are, who we should be honoring (Netυ York Times 2009).Three weeks later, like deus ex machina, US Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger descended onto national stage in disabled jetliner that he guided to safe in River. America needed had arrived. Just when we needed miracle, New York Daily News columnist Michael Daly (2009a) wrote, got one.1This paper draws on what might be called hero theory-formulations of changing functions of in society-and on literature of what Jack Lule (2001) refers to as mythological role of journalism in analyzing newspaper stories about the miracle on Hudson that frame Captain Sullenberger story as modern-day media tale. folk has long been staple of folklore scholarship, from demigods of ancient Mediterranean world to larger-than-life denizens of American frontier. This paper rests on assumption that news media, ever attuned to interest component of current events, can serve as reliable guide to folk conceptualizations of heroic in American life. There is rough consensus among those who have considered subject2 that societies need heroes, for they serve as a symbol of human potential maximized and realized (Rollin 1983:38). Communications scholars make further point that societies need tales, for exploits of however magnificent, must be encoded in story for them to gain currency in culture. Thus media of communication-from epic poem to Entertainment Tonight-play an essential role, not just in bringing hero's exploits to our attention, but in revealing and reinforcing cultural codes that define what counts as an exploit in first place. unsung hero, says Strate (1994:16), is an oxymoron. It is precisely in this sense that news stories may be regarded as myths (Bird and Dardenne 1988).This paper examines month's worth of coverage of Captain Sullenberger in New York's four major daily newspapers ( New York Times, Daily News, New York Post and Wall Street Journal) beginning with emergency landing on January 15, period during which was given keys to cities of New York and Danville, California (where pilot lives) ; was introduced at Super Bowl and at President Obama's address to Congress; and was welcomed as guest on several television news and interview programs.Through all these public appearances, Sully celebrity was as low-key and professional as he reportedly was when he told control tower that his engines were disabled; when he decided his only course of action was to attempt water landing on Hudson; and when he walked through sinking plane twice to make certain that none of 155 passengers remained on board. In words of Daily News story, The former Air Force fighter pilot remained cool, calm, and collected both before and after successfully ditching his US Airways flight into River (Gendar, McShane, and Gillette 2009).At first blush, Sully stories simply describe person whose actions and attributes fit contemporary American culture's definition of hero. Indeed, given amount of corroborative evidence provided by colleagues, family members, friends, neighbors, and witnesses, there is little doubt that news accounts were faithful to Captain Sullenberger's background and behavior. Yet, as Herbert Gans (1980:91) pointed out thirty years ago, to report news is to highlight most compelling elements while deleting the routine, or expected, whatever is not sufficiently important, novel, dramatic or distinctive. …" @default.
