- W245678792 abstract "ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT Shared Histories: A Palestinian-Israeli Dialogue, ed. by Paul Scham, Walid Salem, and Benjamin Pogrund. Jerusalem: Modern Arab Press, 2005. vi + 276 pages. Gloss, to p. 281. $17.50 paper. In 2002, the editors convened seminars in Cyprus and Jerusalem for Israeli and Palestinian scholars and journalists to meet to discuss their perceptions of their own and each other's histories. central premise of the book, in the editors' view, is that how the two sides understand - and misunderstand - their own and the Others' history has a profound influence on their ability - and inability - to make peace (p. 1). Leaving aside for the moment the validity of this assertion, this view challenges the message implicit in the title, Shared Histories, and suggests that these histories are disputed instead. What is shared is the claim to the same land, not the historical accounts justifying each claim, as the dialogues in this book clearly indicate. These sessions, and the resulting book, represent a joint project undertaken by the Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Center for the Dissemination of Democracy and Community Development (Panorama), and the Yakar Center for Social Concern meetings were divided into seven sessions devoted to topics amenable to an Israeli and Palestinian perspective for the same time period, such as The beginnings of Jewish settlement and Zionism, to World War I and The pre-history of Palestinian nationalism. After papers presented by the chosen Israeli and Palestinian, general discussion would ensue. Ten Israelis and ten Palestinians, mostly Israeli Arabs, were invited, but two Palestinian professors, Issam Nassar of al-Quds University and Salim Tamari of Bir Zeit were barred from the conference by Israeli travel restrictions on Palestinians in the occupied territories during the Israeli offensive into the West Bank during spring 2002. Although their papers were read by Palestinian colleagues, this meant that there was a ten-eight Israeli plurality in the discussions, though Nassar apparently attended some sessions. No brief review can mention all contributors nor adequately review the scope of the discussions which were wide-ranging, but also at times diffuse rather than incisive; Israelis often bickered among themselves over correct versions of their own history. Although the editors intervened at times to try to restore clarity to exchanges, more editing would have helped to define differences within each camp as well as between them on specific matters. scholarly level of the papers presented was uneven, whether Israeli or Palestinian. In addition, certain selections of topics for the individual sessions were questionable, especially Topic 4, which was devoted to the Holocaust, not only from the Israeli perspective, but also from the Palestinian perspective. Palestinian participants objected to the fact that the 1948 nakba was not set aside for discussion and shifted the framework to include it. Paradoxically, as a result of this intervention the forum, chaired by Ata Qaymari, a Palestinian journalist, and Delia Ofer of the Hebrew University, was one of the most illuminating, delving into issues of rhetoric and the uses of historical memory. Qaymari observed that the Palestinian commemoration and historiography of the nakba resembles the Israeli approach to the Holocaust as trauma and source of identity against the opponent. Paths of discussion included David Ben Gurion's as well as Menachem Begin's identification of Palestinians as Nazis and the Israeli Jewish attitude toward Israeli Arabs. Palestinians viewed Israeli stress on the Holocaust as a way of denying Palestinian identity and controlling the nature of discourse on nationhood. exchanges were intense, but revealed also the asymmetry of the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians. Some Palestinians noted that they had been students of Israeli scholars who were in the dialogue and remarked that they felt that some Israeli colleagues were seeking to impose their narrative on us (p. …" @default.
