This was not the result of my cunning strategy; it was the result of many years' efforts by the officers, staff, and you, the bankers, getting our message to Congress in a clear and understandable way. It is always that way with any legislative initiative. Teamwork and patience are the watchwords. At the convention last year I said that the ABA needed to re-energize its political grassroots systems. We needed to take a good grassroots program and make it more vibrant and banker driven. Under Jim Smith's leadership, the ABA Grassroots Task Force created the new and improved program called Team 21--Contact Bankers for a New Century. Your state associations now have the materials in hand to kick off this new system in a unified and powerful way so that the ABA will be recognized as having a world-class grassroots system. In Orlando I also spoke of the need for banks to become even more involved in their communities and to be recognized as an invaluable ingredient in shaping the future of this country. Today, over 1,400 banks have decided to become Banks of with our partnership with General Colin Powell's America's Promise organization. Large banks and small banks have come together from every state in the union to be part of this wonderful program aimed at helping the nation's young people become productive members of society. We launched this initiative in February at the Community Bankers Conference, and the response has been overwhelming! Teamwork! We also set out to create a new educational offering at ABA; a source for bank CEOs to learn new concepts and strategic-thinking skills.
