• W2460958674 abstract "For several years there has been debate regarding gender bias in the classroom.1 Unlike the dialogue within larger society surrounding racism, elitism, and sexism, scholars' and educators' opinions regarding the existence of gender bias in the classroom are divided. Many scholars view differential treatment of girls as threatening the foundations of educational reform (Sadker and Sadker 1982; Bailey and Campbell 1992-93). Others deny the existence of gender bias altogether. The various groups that hold a vested interest in the situation seldom share ideas and work collaboratively. Little has been done to show how progressive and innovative pedagogies, content matter, and feminist perspectives can be merged to bring about equity in the classroom. Complicating this lack of communication are very distinct and dramatically different discourses and worldviews. Seemingly, theory and practice have little in common. Little of what feminists study and have learned about women and women's ways of knowing has informed what goes on in the classroom and vice versa; little of what classroom teachers know about girls and which environments and pedagogies best serve girls has surfaced in the work of feminist theorizing. These two groups ultimately know pitifully little about what the other is doing, how to initiate a dialogue, and around what issues such a dialogue should take place.
