- W2461010403 abstract "Objective: To explore the nature of menstrual-related migraine (MRM) in adolescent femalesBackground: Adult females with MRM have higher disability scores than those with nonmenstrual-related migraine (nonMRM), and their menstrual headaches are more disabling, longer, and more difficult to treat than nonmenstrual headaches. MRM occurs in adolescent females but little is known about MRM in this age group and whether this migraine subtype behaves in the same way it does in adults.Design/Methods: Retrospective data on adolescent and young adult females who report having started menarche and were treated for migraine at the Cincinnati Children’s Headache Center was reviewed. Treatment occurred at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Standardized forms were used to record medical information from each patient and entered into a clinical-research database. Results: Of the 3,259 menarchal females seen in the outpatient headache center, 1092 (33.5[percnt]) self-reported MRM, 1556 (47.7[percnt]) denied a menstrual pattern and 611 (18.7[percnt]) were unsure. In comparing those with MRM with those with nonMRM, there was no significant difference in average severity (6.5 v. 6.4), average duration (12.7 v. 12.0 hours), and PedMIDAS (50.9 v. 50.9). Monthly frequency at first visit was slightly higher in the nonMRM group (17.7 v. 19.7). There was also no significant difference at subsequent follow up visits between MRM and nonMRM in improvement in average severity or duration, headache frequency, or PedMIDAS. Of the 1,273 menarchal females requiring IV treatment for status migrainosus, only 183 (14.3[percnt]) reported that the current migraine was associated with a menstrual period and 419 (32.9[percnt]) were unsure. Conclusions: In contrast to reports in adults, MRM in adolescents does not appear to be more disabling, more severe, or more difficult to treat than nonMRM. Further analysis examining by age strata may be able to identify when the transition to the adult pattern occurs. Disclosure: Dr. Hagler has nothing to disclose. Dr. O9Brien has received research support from Labry. Dr. Kabbouche has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kacperski has nothing to disclose. Dr. Powers has nothing to disclose.
