- W2461020872 abstract "This is one of the best books on Thomas Jefferson ever written: sophisticated and clear, persuasive and insightful. Beginning from the modest theme of examining Jefferson's first inaugural address as president in 1801, Professor Stephen Howard Browne reveals the depth of Jefferson's political thought through the medium of his rhetoric. This book is highly recommended for those interested in American political history, Jeffersonian democracy, political rhetoric, and nineteenth-century political parties in the United States. Most scholarly discussions of Jefferson's first inaugural address (including my own) confine themselves to a well-worn reference to “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.” This book does an in-depth analysis of a brief (7-paragraph, 42-sentence, 1,716-word) address rich in political philosophy, symbolism, practical rhetoric, and American ideology. Browne properly calls it a masterpiece. After seeing the multifaceted significance this document contains, one wonders why the mining of such a historical mother lode has not been done before this volume, written 202 years after Jefferson's presidential address. Perhaps it provides the comfort that we cannot expect to be understood for at least ten generations. It was not for want of contemporaneous appreciation of Jefferson's genius of synthesis in his first inaugural. George Tucker observed that although “‘couched in language of humility, and breathing the spirit of benevolence,’” the address asserted “‘all the cardinal principles of the republican faith’” (p. 4)." @default.
