- W2461402325 abstract "Before discussing in detail the function of the intestinal epithelial cell in general, and the characteristics of its polarity in particular, a brief mention of the impor tance and of the general function of the plasma membrane should be made. The cell plasma membrane is not a passive barrier separating the cell compartment from the surrounding media, but is an active structure which participates in main taining the difference in composition between the intracellular and extracellular milieux. Besides holding cell components, the plasma membrane is also the place where several enzymes are located and where many enzymatic reactions take place; the enzymes thus have a support for their action. In addition, some en zymes span the plasma membrane in well-defined spots so that a substrate can be picked up from one side and the product released to the other. The plasma membrane is also asymmetric in shape and chemical composition as far as the cytoplasmic and external surfaces are concerned (ROTHMAN and LENARD 1977; SINGER 1977). Glycoproteins, for instance, are almost exclusively lo cated outwardly. Some proteins are asymmetrically distributed on the outer and the inner surface of the membrane, while others are embedded or span the lipid matrix. Also, phospholipids are placed in a different array between the two sur faces. These observations lead to the conclusion that biologic membranes are vec torial structures providing a molecular basis for functional polarity. Finally, besides the anatomic and biochemical functions, the plasma mem brane also develops a physiologic function, i.e., it constitutes a selective barrier regulating the movement of different substances with or without utilizing meta bolic energy. With regard to these three functions (anatomic, biochemical, and physiologic), it is possible to study the plasma membrane from different view points and with different methods in order to have as complete a model as pos sible." @default.
