- W2461839679 abstract "The highest burst swimming speed (hU_(burst)) of fish obtained from water tunnel experiment can be used to calculate water head difference (Δh) and submerged orifice water velocity (V_o) for the poolweir fishway design. We used the hU_(burst) of 1.63 m/sec of "Acrossocheilus paradoxus" and 1.74 m/sec of "Varicorhinus barbatulus" obtained in our previous study as the water fall velocity (V_2) of the fishway to calculate the Δh to be 13.21 cm and 15.10 cm, respectively, for the two species at the overflow depth (h) of 1 cm. They were slightly lower than 13.8 cm and 17.4 cm of the Δh for 50% fish passage reported by the fishway experiment. Because there is a friction of water fall on the surface of weir, V_2 of the water fall is lower than that calculated from the Δh and the gravity alone. Therefore, the Δh calculated from the hU_(burst) may be used directly as the water head difference in the fishway design. The proper overflow depth was suggested to be at h=1 to 3 cm. As the hU_(burst) was found to be faster than V_o at any of the h, as long as a fish can ascend water falls of the fishway, the fish is also able to swim through its submerged orifice." @default.
