- W2462276688 abstract "BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome, a clustering of metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors, is closely associated with overweight and obesity. Metabolic syndrome is a precursor for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for women and men today. It is diagnosed when three of the five risks are met: increased levels of fasting plasma glucose and triglycerides, hypertension, depressed high-density lipoprotein levels, and abdominal obesity PURPOSE: The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to examine if the prevalence of the metabolic risk factors varies according to percent body fat in DIII college athletes. METHODS: The sample consisted of fifteen young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 years who have participated in a DIII collegiate sport within the year. The athletes voluntarily consented and filled out a brief questionnaire before testing. All testing took place in California Lutheran’s Health Services after an overnight fast. Height, weight, waist circumference, BMI, %Body Fat, HDL cholesterol, fasting triglycerides, and blood glucose were tested using standard protocol. Initial analysis used Spearman’s correlation analysis to determine the prevalence of metabolic risk factors varied according to percent body fat. RESULTS: According to Spearman rho correlation there is no significant correlation (p<0.5) between %Body Fat and metabolic risk factors. There is also no significant correlation (p<0.5) between %Body Fat and the number of metabolic risk factors (p=.254, r=.314). 47% of the participants exhibited one of the risk factors and 13% of the athletes had two of the risk factors. In those participants who measured having a higher body fat percentile for their age, %Body Fat was prove not significant predictor for metabolic risk factors in this study. CONCLUSIONS: TOur study suggests Division III Athletes may not be at risk for metabolic syndrome. However, further studies are clearly warranted." @default.
