- W2462455109 abstract "A considerable share of Britain’s wealth is spent by central and local government, and the question of whether more or less money should be spent by government has become a major political issue in recent years. Public expenditure — or government spending — is the money spent on providing things such as social security, defence, education, the National Health Service and all the other services and payments which come from the State. Money to pay for these services comes from a great variety of taxes, incomes and, in recent years, from revenues obtained by the sale of state assets. If the Chancellor does not have enough money collected in a year to pay for the public spending bill he borrows money, and the amount borrowed is known as the public sector borrowing requirement (PSBR). Reducing the PSBR was a major goal of the Chancellor during the 1980s. This chapter explores the arguments surrounding economic policy and paying for the welfare state." @default.
