• W2462789574 abstract "We investigated the influence of social support on cognition in community dwelling Korean elderly. This study was conducted as a part of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLoSCAD), which was a population-based prospective cohort study of Korean elders aged 60 years and over. Social support was assessed using the Medical Outcome Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS). The MOS-SSS was administered to 3,285 subjects. Poor social support (PSS) was defined as having a MOS-SSS score below the 25th percentile of the entire sample. Poor cognition was defined as 1.5 or more standard deviations below appropriate norms of Korean version of Mini-Mental Status Examination optimized for screening dementia (MMSE-DS). General health status was comprehensively evaluated using the modified Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS), the Revised Korean version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-KR) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index (PSQI). The effect of social support was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis using SPSS Statistics 20. Older age, female, low education, living alone, poor sleep quality, higher medical morbidity, depression, and poor cognition were associated with PSS. Although PSS had negative influence on the cognition, it was no longer significant after adjusting covariates as remarked above (OR=1.13, 95% CI=0.883-1.44). However, among the various forms of social support, poor affectionate support was significantly associated with risk of poor cognition (OR=1.39, 95% CI = 1.02-1.91). Overall social support had no effect on cognition. But affectionate support which defined as expressions of love and affection may be beneficial on cognition. Social support programs especially focusing on the prevention of cognitive decline must be further investigated and developed on the Korean situation." @default.
