- W2463429163 abstract "A fundamental challenge for human cognition isperceiving and acting in a world in which the statistics thatcharacterize available sensory data are non-stationary. Thisthesis focuses on this problem specifically in the domain ofsentence comprehension, where linguistic variability posescomputational challenges to the processes underlying sentencecomprehension. We begin by framing the problem of linguisticvariation, especially in syntax, and then propose that humansrespond to this variability by continuously adapting to andlearning the statistical regularities of novel linguisticenvironments. Experiments 1-6 provide evidence that, in the face ofa novel environment whose statistics violate subjects’expectations, subjects adjust their linguistic expectations inorder to allow their expectations to converge towards thestatistics of the current environment. These experiments tacitlyassume that adaptation is error-sensitive: subjects adapt whentheir expectations are violated. Experiment 7 explicitly addressesand tests this tacit assumption. In that experiment, we provide aquantitative operationalization of the syntactic “error signal” inlanguage comprehension, and ask how the magnitude of this errorsignal correlates with immediate changes in linguisticexpectations. This experiment also provides the context for a morein-depth discussion of what type of cognitive mechanism might giverise to the experimental results reported in this thesis.Experiment 8 attempts to more directly address the presumedenvironment-specificity of adaptation by asking whetherdistributional information indexed to a particular environment andto particular verbs can be retained over multiple days. The workreported here takes a step toward synthesizing three lines ofresearch in psycholinguistics that have previously proceededlargely in parallel: (1) experience- or expectation-basedprocessing, (2) syntactic priming, and (3) statistical learning inlanguage. The work here also suggests an intriguing if somewhattentative link between adaptation in syntactic comprehension onthe one hand and adaptation in lower-level speech perception andnon-linguistic perception, where adaptation phenomena havepreviously been more thoroughly examined." @default.
