- W2464252007 abstract "PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to ascertain differences in adaptation at equal training at moderate altitude (1000-1500 m) but different habituation and living: at 1500 m altitude (LMTMA - living at moderate and training at moderate altitude) or at 1500 m altitude with additional normobaric hypoxia (FiO2 = 0.18) (LHTMA - living at high altitude and training at moderate altitude). METHODS: A group of trained cross-country skiers used LMTMA method (N= 8; AGE: 21 ± 3 yrs; Ht: 180±5 cm, BW = 73 ± 4 kg) or LHTMA method (N= 5, AGE = 22±3 yrs, Ht = 178±3 cm, BW= 72±3 kg). All participants performed maximal trials using cross country ski rollers (TRIAL) and submaximal testing on cycle ergometer (3.5 W.kg-1). In addition to cardiorespiratory measurements (Vmax Spectra, Yorba Linda, CA, USA), near infrared spectroscopy (NIRO 200, Hamamatsu, Japan) was used to assess muscle oxygenation. RESULTS: When LMTMA was used, TRIAL velocity increased from 3.17±0.30 (pre) to 3.44±0.33 m.s-1 (post) (P = 0.04). However, when LHTMA during TRIAL, the velocity did not change significantly: 3.18±0.30 (pre) to 3.35±0.35 (post) m.s-1; (P>0.05). During similar absolute submaximal performance testing, LMTMA maintained concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb), increased tissue oxygenated index (TOI), from -11.5±65 to 1.0±8.5 % (P=0.03), decreased total hemoglobin concentration (TOTHb) from 13.8±7.0 to 1.7±12.9 μmol (P = 0.02) and deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration (HHb) from 24.8±10.1 to 10.6±12.1 μmol (P = 0.02). The decrease of TOTHb correlated (r= -0.77; P<0.05) with increased TRIAL velocity. Subjects who used LHTMA did not change significantly muscle oxygenation; however they increased pulmonary ventilation from 76±14 to 88±10 l.min-1 (P= 0.02) and SaO2 from 94±1 to 96±1% (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: The results of our study suggest that specific changes in variables of muscle oxygenation influenced by LMTMA may have contributed to increased velocity of cross-country ski roller performance." @default.
