- W2464845350 abstract "This dissertation considers wireless and wired resource allocation problems in mobile cellular networks. First, we consider dynamic allocation strategies of radio bandwidth, which is divided into a set of carriers by frequency division. We classify dynamic carrier allocation (DCA) strategies into three classes according to how priorities are assigned to carriers: static-priority DCA strategies, hybrid-priority DCA strategies, and dynamic-priority DCA strategies. Here, we will lay out a theoretical foundation for DCA strategies: we first develop the concept of optimal reuse pattern and then propose a model for resource planning as well as three guiding principles for priority assignment in static- and hybrid-priority DCA strategies. These theoretical results will shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of existing DCA strategies and lead us to developing more efficient ones. Specifically, we propose three new DCA strategies: Column-Wise static-priority strategy, Column-Wise hybrid-priority strategy, and Two-Step dynamic-priority strategy.Second, we systematically study the problem of distributed implementation of DCA strategies. There are two general approaches for distributed DCA algorithms: the update approach and the search approach. We investigate the fundamental differences between the two approaches by studying two simple, representative schemes, namely update scheme I and search scheme I. We will argue that the update approach is more appropriate for mobile cellular networks that support real-time communications. We then propose two advanced update schemes (update scheme II and update scheme III) that are more efficient than update scheme I in terms of message complexity and carrier acquisition delay.Last, we investigate the allocations of isochronous channels in IEEE 802.6 (DQDB) based Personal Communication Network (PCN). In such a PCN, the base stations of wireless infrastructures are connected by a number of DQDBs which in turn are connected via bridges. Two mobile users may start communications once a wireless channel is assigned at the caller's cell and the callee's cell, respectively, and an isochronous channel is reserved at each DQDB along the path from caller's DQDB to callee's DQDB. We propose a protocol for call setup and path migration in a cluster of DQDBs, which uses a link-state-like routing method for efficient path selections and a source-routing-based scheme for fast path establishments. In addition, we propose a labeling scheme that makes it possible to carry the path information needed by the source routing protocol in a single 53-octet DQDB slot. Without such labeling scheme, source routing would be inefficient for our purpose." @default.
