- W2465164069 abstract "FigureEach year, approximately 250,000 children aged 0–17 years are burned severely enough to require medical attention (Burn Foundation, 2016). With summer arriving, there is an increase in burns from sunburns, grilling, campfires, and fireworks. In addition, scald burns from hot food and beverages account for at least 100,000 burns per year (Burn Foundation, 2016). Pediatric surgical nurses are pivotal in the treatment of burns by providing care including local burn care, intensive care for severe burns and inhalation burns, burn care instructions, and prevention education and outreach. Specialized burn hospitals each take care of over 200 patients per year (American Burn Association, 2016), so if your institution provides care to patients with burns, you very well may be needed to provide the most up-to-date burn care. This burn issue provides a representation of several areas of burn care from the development of a burn clinic and educational materials, a comparison of two burn products from the many products that are used, to an unusual case for Name the Diagnosis. For those of you who take care of patients with burns, this can be a mentally and physically challenging job because of the patient's pain and anxiety related to dressing changes and disfigurement. Families may have a difficult time because many burns are accidents, which may have been preventable. As pediatric surgical nurses, we need to support and keep each other updated on the latest care and prevention and continue to do the same for our pediatric patients and their families. Thank you to our amazing burn nurses, and have a safe summer season!" @default.
