- W2465633204 abstract "Strengthening techniques of steel beams involve an expensive process of welding/bolting heavy steel pates to the section. Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strips offer an attractive strengthening alternative. Investigations to-date has been limited to applying the FRP strips to the tension flange of the steel I-section in order to increase its flexural strength. However, for thin walled I-section steel beams the risk of buckling failure is also a major concern. I-sections subject to flexure are classified into four classes depending on the width to thickness ratios of the web and the flanges. Compact sections of Class 1 and Class 2 can develop the full plastic moment of the cross-section while Class 3 sections are guaranteed only to develop the cross-section yield moment. Failure of Class 4 sections is totally controlled by local buckling: these sections fail before reaching the yield moment. This paper numerically investigates the effect of bonding CFRP strips to the webs of thin-walled I-section steel beams in the vicinity of the compression part of the web, on the beam's flexural strength. The main advantage of this technique is delaying the local buckling of the beam's web. The analysis results indicate that bonding the CFRP strips in such configuration increases the critical load by a ratio ranging between 20% and 60% while the beam's ultimate strength marginally increase by a ratio ranging between 2% and 9%." @default.
