- W2465673978 abstract "To students of Handel, the name of Agostino Steffani is comparatively familiar. He was Handel’s most celebrated predecessor as Kapellmeister at Hanover and the leading exponent of the Italian chamber duet in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Furthermore, his duets are generally recognized as the principal model for Handel’s compositions of that kind. In spite of this, Steffani’s music is still relatively unknown and his influence on Handel’s chamber duets remains largely unexplored. The present paper investigates the relationship between the duets of these two composers in greater detail than appears to have been attempted hitherto; it presents evidence to suggest that Steffani exerted a decisive influence on the thematic material, the contrapuntal style and the structure of Handel’s chamber duets; and it concludes with a number of observations on the significance of Handel’s contribution to the history of the genre.KeywordsRevise VersionThematic MaterialEarly Eighteenth CenturyLate SeventeenthHigh PerfectionThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
