- W2465888906 abstract "While Marco Polo seems to have been the first European to visit and write of the archipelago, the historiography of the area in English begins with William Marsden’s The History of Sumatra (1783).1 As Bastin notes, this was not the first work about the region to be published in English, but it was ‘the first detailed account of Sumatra’ to appear in any European language (HS, viii). More important, Bastin claims, it was the first to provide ‘truly scientific categories of analysis’ (HS, ix). As a result it laid the basis for the development of Southeast Asian studies.2 The antecedents for its ‘scientific categories of analysis’ are the subject of this chapter; together with the textual tradition that developed from it. This chapter will suggest how a semiotic component derived from the practices of merchants combined with a material component derived from the practices of the landed gentry. This discursive formation will, in turn, be mapped onto the transition from the monarchical rule of the sixteenth century through the changes of seventeenth-century commonwealth and Restoration to the eighteenth-century development of the administrative machinery of government. To put it in other words, the chapter traces the writing of Malaysia as part of the Enlightenment project." @default.
