- W2465965173 abstract "some lengths to note the differences in the origins of the curriculum development movements in the USA and in Britain. Atkin2 reminds us that the first attempts to change the school science curriculum began in the USA, with the initiative being taken by the university scientists who produced the innovative materials. The subsequent development programme was financed by the Federal Government. In contrast, the thrust to invigorate science education in Britain is generally believed to have been provided by school teachers; the major curriculum projects were funded by a charitable trust. Coulson3 has emphasised that this domination of science curriculum development by schoolteachers puts Britain in a special position in the field of educational development. At least one of these curriculum projects, Nuffield 'A' level physics (NAP), however, was shaped and influenced by university physics teachers as well as by those in schools and colleges. In fact, this university pressure is ignored in much of the published material dealing with NAP. Moreover, reviews by Ingle and Jennings4 and Fuller reveal that references about NAP are sparse in the literature and are sometimes inaccurate. For example, it is not widely recognised that Nuffield 'A' level physics, and Nuffield 'A' level chemistry, evolved from the idea to develop a joint 'A' level physical science course called 'The Structure and Properties of Matter' (SPM). Nor is it recorded that two project teams were involved in the organisation of NAP and that intensive pressure from university physics teachers resulted in the resignation of the first NAP Organiser, V.
