- W2466334462 abstract "PURPOSE Training intensity is generally prescribed relative to an individually determined reference value (e. g. VO2max) aiming at comparable exercise-induced perturbations of homeostasis (and thus similar stimuli for adaptation) among individuals with different absolute exercise capacities. However, perturbations of homeostasis are multifaceted (e.g. cardiopulmonary and metabolic) and large interindividual variability in intensity markers has been reported for constant load exercise with standardized relative intensity. However, the utility of individual relationships between the reference value and other markers of exercise intensity (e.g. blood lactate concentration, BLa) remains to be investigated. METHODS 15 trained cyclists (VO2peak 67 ± 7 ml·kg-1·min-1) completed a stepwise incremental cycling test to exhaustion followed by 5 constant load tests with the absolute workloads of steps in the incremental test. The highest workload yielding a lactate steady state was repeated. From constant load tests courses of BLa relative to the respective reference parameter (%VO2peak; %HRmax) were fit by a polynomial regression model in a group based approach as well as separately for each individual. The change in accuracy with individualized regression was estimated as the change in squared errors for the prediction of BLa in the repetition test. Within-subject variability in the relationship of intensity markers was estimated from the repeated constant load tests using a random effects model. RESULTS Predictive accuracy was increased by 31% for VO2peak (p<0,05) and by 75% for HFmax (p<0,05) for individual compared to group based regression. Within-subject variability accounts for 13% of total variability in the relationship to BLa for VO2peak (CV 29%) and 11% for HFmax (CV 28%). CONCLUSION Training prescriptions aiming at accurately targeted deflections of homeostasis should take into account individual relationships between intensity markers." @default.
