- W2467047962 abstract "This is a strange book to review. Michael Knox Beran is not a historian, and Jefferson's Demons does not qualify as history. It is a meditation, richly embroidered with classical allusions. Beran's Thomas Jefferson exists in Per-sepolis at least as much as he inhabits the eighteenth-century political world. Indeed, the “demons” of the title really refer to the genii (or manes) of the Greek and Roman literary imagination; the author describes a demon as “a spirit allotted to a man at birth, a sprite or ghost that helped to determine the man's character or fortune” (p. 99). In Jefferson's case, his demons, his “good voices” (p. 102), drove him to act and inspired him to embrace republican principles. Beran intuits. He haphazardly styles Jefferson a man suffering “from periodic bouts of apathy and dejection” (p. 8), “a decayed knight” (p. 38), “a man descended from a family with a history of mental instability” (p. 62), “a student of ennui” (p. 64), “a searcher” (p. 71), one possessing “involutions of character” and caught amid “the whole masquing subterfuge of his guises and personas” (p. 102), “a prophet in Jerusalem” (p. 120), “a great artist” in politics (p. 174). Classical voices so absorb this Jefferson that he hardly has any time to dwell in his here and now. The politician so obviously demonized by partisan bitterness seems here unable to live outside Old World fantasy. Reading Beran's charmed prose (“He went on in sunlight, passing through villages bleached by the sun, washed in the colors of the Mediterranean palette: white, pink, peach, robin's-egg blue,” p. 105), one comes to wonder, when does informed speculation become mere pretense?" @default.
