- W2467414983 abstract "The majority of U.S. adults participate in outdoor recreation, and hiking is one of the top two activities. However, little literature exists detailing physiological responses to trail hiking. PURPOSE: The purposes were to 1) compare cardiovascular and ratings of perceived exertion measurements during hiking on easy rated versus strenuous trails, 2) compare measurements from the uphill versus downhill component of a strenuous trail, and 3) determine the intraclass correlation (ICC) reliability of measurements on the easy trail. METHODS: Volunteers (male, N = 7, female N = 3) completed two easy rated hikes (1.13 miles) with 15-minute rest between trials, and one strenuous (1.13 miles each way at 17.6% grade to an elevation of 6500 feet) trail hike at a set speed of 2 mph. Measurements were heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). Rate pressure product (RPP) was calculated as the product of HR x SBP. Measures were compared using paired t-Tests, and Intraclass correlation coefficients for test-retest analysis were determined using SPSS with significance at p≤0.05. RESULTS: Significant ICC were observed for HR (r = 0.59, p = 0.03), SBP (r = 0.57, p = 0.04) and RPE (r = 0.88, p = 0.01). The strenuous uphill trail elicited significantly increased HR (102±17 bpm, 53% age-estimated HRmax), RPP (127±22 bpm*mmHg), and RPE (11±1) compared to both the easy rated trail (HR = 76±9 bpm, 39% age-estimated HRmax, p=0.01; RPP = 93±11 bpm*mmHg, p=0.01; RPE = 8±1, p=0.01), as well as the downhill portion (HR = 85±10 bpm, 44% age-estimated HRmax, p=0.01; RPP = 101±19 bpm*mmHg, p = 0.02; RPE = 9±1, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: This shows that select cardiovascular and perceived exertion variables display significant test-retest reliability. In addition, while differences were observed between easy versus strenuous rated trail hikes, the HR measurements do not correspond with ACSM definitions of exercise intensity (i.e. moderate, high). Individuals wishing to utilize trail ratings as a guide for exercise intensity should take these findings into consideration." @default.
