- W2469106013 abstract "About a dozen years ago I published an overview of the debate about the strengths and weaknesses of research in one's own society (Aguilar 1981). Much of the debate centered on the presumed lack of objectivity on the part of insider researchers and the lack of cultural insight on the part of outsider researchers. I characterized the debate as essentially groundless since in reality both insider and outsider researchers are subject to the dangers of bias and problems of objectivity. Outsiders, I said, have the problem of getting culturally close enough to their subjects in order to know what it is they are being objective about, while insiders must somehow stand back from their domestic world in order to recognize the cultural categories underlying the actions they wish to describe and understand objectively. I concluded with the suggestion that the insider and outsider approaches to research may be complementary and that instead of resistance and vituperation we should encourage insider researchers since, as Srinivas (himself an insider re searcher) suggests, their biases may very well be sources of insight as well as error. We should therefore encourage them to reflect upon and share informa tion concerning experienced advantages and disadvantages, so that their research may serve quoting Cicourel 'both as a source of data and a datum itself of comparative methodology.' Below I try to follow this advice by comparing the circumstances of my research at home (the United States southwest) and abroad (southeastern Mexico) and my responses to those circumstances in terms of my research behavior. One thing is clear, ethnographic fieldwork is a very personal activity. Regardless of one's training in technical procedures, the actual conduct of fieldwork will often reflect personal considerations not accounted for in our idealized research policies and methodologies. The present account is both a construction and a reconstruction of my re search experience. To a large extent it has elements of what Abraham Kaplan (1964:3-12) has termed 'reconstructed logic' (my idealized view or hypothesis about what has been the case) and 'logic in use' (a description of what has" @default.
