- W2469186622 abstract "In the case studies I identified how the four departments worked in student teacher education and described the learning opportunities for the student teachers in relation to this work. Analysing each department’s cultural history and social practices in relation to student teacher education created an appreciation of the social situation of development for the student teachers working in them. In Chapter 9 the analysis of tool use further illustrated how the student teachers’ learning opportunities varied depending on how the participants in the student teacher education activity systems used tools to mediate the work on the object. For example, student teachers when working with participants who used student teacher education tools to open up their thinking about teaching and learning discussed matters of pedagogy and questioned and debated these openly, interpreting teaching contexts and developing an understanding of their complexity. This was further enhanced where participants jointly experimented with their ideas, and created an ongoing exploration of the variety of approaches possible when doing the work. Where tools were sidelined or treated as rules in the student teacher education activity system, debates tended to centre on lesson ideas in terms of their content and planning potential, with established teachers giving guidance and advice and sharing what worked effectively for them in the teaching context." @default.
