Being a productnof mainstream society has presented crippling blows for our people. How Indigenousn.peoples navigate our lives through what at times seems the quagmire of white rules,nforms, protocols etc. is important to note as the interviewees share some of thosenstories. Therefore an understanding of how we think, act and behave is paramount tonbetter communication flow between each other.There are some wise pieces of advice in the stories such as size does not fit asncommunities and people are different wherever one goes; Elders and significant peoplenneed to be consulted; gender issues are important; be careful not to stereotype;nimportance of supervision; use of information, education and advocacy; have patience;nnetwork; be a good listener; find culturally appropriate family programs, get advicenabout parenting styles; confidentiality; be friendly; concentrate on the positives andnstrengths; use appropriate language and not esoteric words; be guided by the community;nwork as a team.However the overall strategy and core business is to build good relationships withnIndigenous peoples. Here one has to work in a holistic way and in doing so be awarenof the family dynamics including kinship and the extended family. The child is alwaysnconnected. Be conscious that Indigenous people will introduce themselves in this wayn- where you from, who are your mob?And whatever you do, do not blame the victim. We have enough people including ournown doing that for us quite publicly. Keep informed of current trends and events. Makenyourself aware of the history and culture especially with the Stolen Generations andnintergenerational post traumatic stress. The historical legacy is fundamental to the waynIndigenous people and communities are placed in society. Remember that Indigenousnfamilies are suspicious of child protection services as they continue to take the childrennaway as they did in the past they perceive.
