- W2469439485 abstract "Endogenous arachidonic acid, when cleaved from cell membranes by the actions of lipases, notably phospholipase A2, is metabolised to a variety of biologically-active products in the gastrointestinal tract. Both prostacyclin and PGE2, which are biosynthesized via the cyclo-oxygenase enzyme in gastric mucosal tissue, exert potent anti-secretory, vasodilator and anti-ulcer actions on the stomach (see Whittle &; Vane, 1983). Such endogenous cyclo-oxygenase products may be involved in the modulation of blood flow in the mucosal microcirculation. Much attention has been focussed on the protective properties of exogenous prostanoids against the induction of gastrointestinal damage and the physiological or pathophysiological role of endogenous prostaglandins in maintaining mucosal integrity against challenge with damaging agents." @default.
