- W2469949001 abstract "I am pleased to offer some comments on Mariana’s Valverde’s stimulating lecture about what she calls security (or securitising) projects. With her characteristic combination of theoretical acumen and empirical illustration she shows us that if we want to make progress in understanding these we would do well to analyse separately their logic (or logics), their scale (both spatial and temporal), the relevant claims to jurisdiction and their chosen techniques. She shows us not only that we govern through crime (and the promise of security) but also that crime is produced through our governing. I fully agree with her insistence on the need to avoid over-sharp distinctions between different forms of social control and the value of empirical case studies as a means to understand their interrelation in practice (Nelken, 1989). What I have to say therefore has rather to do with matters where her argument could perhaps benefit from further development. In addition (as she herself invites us to do) I shall try to apply her framework to examples of security projects that I am currently studying." @default.
