- W2470042337 abstract "One problem with modern high performance architectures is that processor speeds are rapidly increasing while memory speeds are not keeping pace. Designs that stress the highest average performance introduce techniques such as pipelining and caching that leave behind execution stream holes in the form of processor idle time.This thesis introduces Cambio, a technique that utilizes idle time caused by cache stalls to execute a secondary instruction stream whenever there is a cache miss. The primary stream is given higher priority, so that additional throughput is gained without significantly extending the primary stream execution time. By limiting the number of active streams to two, the processor is used efficiently while keeping the overhead to a minimum. Calculations indicate that Cambio would require less than a 15% increase in processor hardware--with resource sharing possible in some cases. The thesis also introduces a taxonomy of computer structures that has the potential to systematically derive and classify a full spectrum of computer architectures.Simulations have shown that, in many cases, Cambio can utilize 90% of the previously existing idle cycles. This idle time reduction translates to a throughput increase of up to 13%. Additional experiments with a small secondary stream (a factor of ten smaller than the primary stream) indicate that as much as 100% of the smaller stream can be executed in the shadow of the main stream--improving the response time of the secondary stream without significantly decreasing the performance of the primary stream. A technique called trace-signatures is proposed as a method for qualitatively evaluating the compatibility of multi-streamed tasks. These results suggest that Cambio may be especially well-suited for applications such as low-cost error detection and on-line diagnosis." @default.
