- W24700992 abstract "Nuclear radiation and sources of radioactivity are collectively called radionuclides. This chapter describes radionuclide decay, radionuclide mass, and radioactivity units. The activity of a given radionuclide in a sample is proportional to the number of radioactive atoms present in that sample. The activity decreases with time as a result of radionuclide decay. A unit of time in which there is an observable change in the activity of a given quantity of radionuclide may be very short—of the order of seconds, or very long—of the order of many years. Rates of radionuclide decay are usually expressed in terms of half-life. Radionuclide decay is a logarithmic relation, and the straight line obtained on the semilogarithmic plot permits a more accurate determination of the half-life. With the help of graphs and equations, the phenomenon of radioisotope decay equilibrium—such as secular equilibrium, transient equilibrium, or no equilibrium state—is illustrated in the chapter." @default.
