- W2470747127 abstract "PURPOSE:To examine the effect of boosters (postcards) mailed during a 9-month post-intervention period on girls’ MVPA at follow-up. METHODS:Fifth to 7th grade girls (n=117) recruited from two urban, Midwest schools with similar demographic characteristics participated in a 17-week PA intervention. One of two schools was randomly assigned to a condition in which girls (n=54) received motivational, individually tailored messages on postcards that were based on each girl’s responses to a web-based survey completed during the intervention. Thirteen postcards were mailed post-intervention at regular intervals to each girl prior to the 9-month follow-up assessment. Accelerometers were used to measure MVPA at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and 9 -month follow up (T2); and girls completed a postcard evaluation survey at T2. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine differences across time and between groups. RESULTS: Girls ranged in age from 11 to 14 years (M=12.0, SD =0.66). Most were Black (n=82, 70.1%) and in the free or reduced-price lunch program (n=111, 90.1%). There was only a significant main effect of time (F1, 59=51.42, p<.001, partial η2=.47) on MVPA. MVPA did not change significantly from T0 to T1, but decreased significantly from T1 to T2. No between-group differences occurred. According to the survey, 64.3% (n=27) of girls reported receiving 13 postcards, and 40.7% of those girls (n=11) read all 13. About half of the girls (n = 21) reported that receiving the postcards helped them to stay active, and less than half (n = 18) talked with others about the ideas listed on the postcards for increasing PA. CONCLUSIONS: The findings demonstrate no effect of using mailed postcards as boosters to help girls sustain MVPA. One possible explanation is that girls did not read or apply the ideas on the postcards even though they received them. Innovative and effective strategies to help maintain PA post-intervention warrant further investigation. Supported by NIH grant (R01HL109101-02S1; LBR, PI)" @default.
