- W2471569109 abstract "PURPOSE: Recent work based on high intensity constant load endurance exercise document that the majority of peripheral fatigue develops during the first half of exercise, while a measurable degree of central fatigue only occurs towards task failure. This contrasts with the hypothesis of a strong link between the development of these two components of fatigue and rather suggests central and peripheral fatigue are not associated with each other. Given the task specificity and dependence associated with the development of fatigue, we investigated the progression of both peripheral and central fatigue during a cycling time trial, an exercise modality that allows the subjects to change power output ad libitum. METHODS: Following sufficient familiarization, six active males completed a self-paced 5 km cycling time trial (5K; 8.8 ± 0.4 min). To characterize the development of fatigue during the 5K, participants returned on separate days to complete a 1, 2.5 and 4 km time trial (random order) while they matched power output and cadence from the initial 5K. Peripheral locomotor muscle fatigue was assessed by changes in pre- to post-exercise quadriceps twitch forces to electrical femoral nerve stimulation (ΔQtw). Central fatigue was assessed by changes in pre- to post-exercise voluntary quadriceps activation determined by transcranial magnetic stimulation (ΔVA). RESULTS: Both peripheral and central fatigue progressively and significantly increased from the start to the end of exercise (1K: ΔQtw 15±3%, ΔVA 3±2%; 2.5K: ΔQtw 25±3%, ΔVA 5±1%; 4K: ΔQtw 31±4%, ΔVA 6±1%; 5k: 42±5%, ΔVA 10±1%; ). As reflected by the correlation coefficient, the development of peripheral and central fatigue was significantly related during exercise (r = 0.50, p<0.05). The rate of peripheral fatigue (ΔQtw/time) significantly decreased from the 1st (0 km to 1 km) to the 4th (2.5 km to 4 km) kilometer (0.15 Nm/s to 0.04 Nm/s), but rose again during the final kilometer (4 km to 5 km; 0.10 Nm/s). CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to the findings from constant load exercise studies, both peripheral and central fatigue developed progressively throughout time trial exercise. Furthermore, the development of both of these components of fatigue are positively correlated throughout intense self-paced exercise." @default.
