- W2471839934 abstract "Sleep deprivation negatively influences cognitive abilities including reaction time and processing speed; however, effects of sleep quality on head impact severity have not been identified. Collegiate football players with poor sleep quality may have a delayed reaction to impending collisions resulting in greater impacts severity. PURPOSE: To determine if there is a significant difference in head impact severity between collegiate football players based on sleep quality. METHODS: Sixteen division I collegiate football players (height = 187.96±3.17 cm, mass = 107.13±7.67 kg, age = 20.13±0.75 years) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a subjective assessment of the previous month’s sleep quality. Each PSQI response was scored 0-3. We considered scores 0-1 “good quality” and 2-3 “poor quality” for the following sleep quality constructs: duration, disturbance, latency, day dysfunction, efficiency, overall quality, and medication. The Head Impact Telemetry (HIT) System captured peak linear acceleration (g), peak rotational acceleration (rad/sec2), and Head Impact Technology severity profile (HITsp - unitless) (n = 9,759 impacts > 10 g) at all practices during the month prior to PSQI administration. Seven random intercepts general linear models compared head impact severity between players with poor and good sleep quality (α < .05). RESULTS: Players with poor (shorter) sleep duration sustained greater severity head impacts (HITsp: 15.34, 95% CI: 14.63, 16.08) compared to players with good (longer) sleep duration (HITsp: 14.37, 95% CI: 13.87, 14.87) (F = 5.77, p = .031). Players with poor overall sleep quality sustained impacts of significantly higher linear acceleration (28.53 g, 95% CI: 28.01, 29.06) (F = 8.37, p = .012) and HITsp (15.57, 95% CI: 15.19, 15.96) (F = 17.93, p < .001) compared to players with good sleep quality (linear: 26.49 g, 95% CI: 25.16, 27.90; HITsp: 14.34, 95% CI: 13.86, 14.82). There were no significant differences in other measures. CONCLUSION: Football players with overall poor sleep quality and shorter duration sustained impacts of higher severity. The decrease in sleep quality may delay a response to impending collisions. Clinicians should consider adding a sleep assessment to baselines and provide educational interventions for those with a trend of poor sleep quality." @default.
