- W2472096197 abstract "PURPOSE: Muscle atrophy results in impaired capillary network, which is related to a dysfunction of endothelial cells. Oxidative stress processes are one of the main background mechanisms present in apoptotic endothelial cells and impaired capillary network. Propolis is natural polyphenol-rich substance collected by honeybees that may be expected to attenuate impaired capillary network in atrophied skeletal muscle. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the amelioration of impaired capillary network in unloading-induced atrophied muscle by propolis supplementation. METHODS: Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were assigned randomly either to a control, control with propolis supplementation, hindlimb unloaded or hindlimb unloaded with propolis supplementation group for 14 days. The three-dimensional capillary network of soleus muscle was visualized using a confocal laser scanning technique, and the capillary volume and capillary-to-fiber ratio were measured. Several pro- and anti-angiogenic factors, and oxidative stress maker were also determined. RESULTS: The capillary volume and capillary-to-fiber ratio in atrophied muscle were lower than those in control. Propolis supplementation attenuated the decrease of capillary volume and capillary-to-fiber ratio in atrophied muscle. In addition, the expression levels of thrombospondin-1, as an anti-angiogenic factor, and SOD-1, oxidative stress maker, in propolis supplemented muscle were attenuated. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that propolis supplementation may be an effective treatment to counter the detrimental effects of a chronic decrease in skeletal muscle use on the capillary.
