• W2472467855 abstract "In this paper craniometry is used to explore the population history of the Venda, a modern ethnic groupfrom the Limpopo Province in South Africa. Current archaeological theory suggests that the Venda people arose as a consequence of inter-ethnic trade alliances within the Soutpansberg area during the last 500 years. Sofar, studies on Venda history have been based on either ethnographic or archaeological evidence and have yet to integrate biological data. Thus, the aim of this study is to provide additional evidence to our understanding of Venda origins through biological remains. Comparisons are drawn between various East Africans (n = 154), South Africans (Sotho-Tswana and Nguni, n = 61), San (Riet River, n = 38), Venda (n = 96) and K2 (n = 3). The level of differentiation between the Venda and other groups is assessed using discriminantfunction analysis. Factor analysis is used to compare the affinities between the very small archaeological human bone samplefrom K2 and the Venda and other groups. The results suggest that the Venda have closer affinities with neighbouring South Africans than East Africans. K2 was shown to have biological affinities with modern Bantu-speaking groups from both eastern and southern Africa and thus should be considered broadly ancestral to modern Bantu-speaking populations." @default.
