- W247260607 abstract "The research presented in this paper focuses on the development of a model to describe interactions between pedestrians and turning-vehicles at signalized crosswalks operating under combined pedestrian-vehicle interval. This approach is based on a new definition of interactions between the vehicles turning during the permissive right- or left-turn phases and the pedestrians who walk on crosswalks during the pedestrian green interval, simultaneously. Interactions are defined as potential conflicts and determined as a situation in which the paths of a turning-vehicle and pedestrian cross, and both are simultaneously present within the conflict area. Conflict areas are defined for the study crosswalks for right- and left-turning vehicles, separately. Regression curves fitted for modeling the interactions and their predictive capabilities are reported in the paper. The modeling results showed that the interactions between turning-vehicles and pedestrians at signalized intersection crosswalks are simply a function of the traffic flow of turning-vehicles and pedestrians. The models developed using regression analysis yielded satisfactory results with high R2 values, and significant F and t-statistics at the 0.05 level. The results from this analysis can be used in order to classify signalized intersections with respect to the risk/hazard they impose on pedestrians due to turning-vehicles during the pedestrian green interval. Moreover, calculated conflict rates could be employed to develop a criterion in selecting whether an exclusive signal phasing is necessary for pedestrians. More importantly, the results of the analyses can be used to establish the appropriate timing of traffic signals at locations where crossing demand by pedestrians conflicting with turning vehicles is high. Key words: Pedestrian-vehicle interaction, potential conflict, pedestrian crosswalk, modeling interactions, regression model." @default.
