- W2472874812 abstract "It is argued that the discussions of the concept of strategy in papers by Crow (1989) and Morgan (1989) ignore the military origins of strategic thinking, and that more attention needs to be given to its diffusion from military to general social usage, as well as to specifically sociological uses. The paper then outlines a critique of strategic studies derived from the sociology of war. It argues that sociologists can learn, from the problems and current controversies of strategic studies, some of the limitations of strategic analysis as an approach in sociology. Sociology's recognition of 'strategy' as an important term in the contemporary discipline has a particular interest for me as I have just made a lone sociological contribution to a symposium, What is Strategic Studies ? (RIIA 1989). What was initially fascinating (indeed extraordinary) was that both Crow's (1989) and Morgan's (1989) contributions completely ignored the origins of 'strategy' in military thought and practice. And yet it is essential to ask, in considering the currently very wide range of uses of the term, how and when the crossover from military to civil uses was made, as well as how the specifically social scientific or sociological usages were developed. This paper will argue that it is also worth enquiring into the implications of the term's military origins and connotations for social and sociological usages. Finally, there are lessons from the longer- theorised military tradition of 'strategic' thought for the newer vogue for 'strategy' in sociology. Crow gives only modest attention, in his useful survey of recent sociological uses of the term, to its intellectual origins. He appears to believe that the concept derives from game theory, or more generally rational-choice theory, such as the work of Elster (1983 and 1986). At the same time he admits that the term has been widely used in a range of social science work, and in some cases for a considerable period of time. It would appear that 'strategic' usage may predate the development of rational-choice theory and that, while this may be one 'theoretical underpinning' (Crow 1989:4) it is by no means the only possible one." @default.
